Queensland (QLD)

Queensland, Australia’s second largest state is also known as the ‘Sunshine State’ and has always been a magnet for holiday makers (both local and overseas). 1 955 islands and atolls are scattered along the almost 7 000 kilometres of coastline of the Coral Sea and South Pacific Ocean.  The breathtakingly beautiful marine environment of the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef stretches from Cape York in the state’s north to Bundaberg (several hours north of Brisbane).  There are 1 600 species of fish as well as turtles and dugongs and extensive gardens of coral.  22 of the reef’s islands cater for tourists providing all types of accommodation and offering a myriad of water sports - diving, sailing, swimming, fishing, windsurfing to name a few.

Brisbane - Capital of Queensland

A beach on the famed Gold Coast

As two thirds of Queensland sits above the Tropic of Capricorn, there are no shortage of tropical rainforests both ancient and magnificent such as the Daintree located near Port Douglas north of the hugely popular tourist destination of Cairns.  This area experiences a monsoonal climate resulting in the ‘Wet Season’ from November to January each year.  Captain James Cook’s vessel, the Endeavour ran aground in this area in 1770 and the small township of Cooktown was subsequently named after him.

Much of the west of the state is arid outback country.  Winton, a small town in central western Queensland is steeped in history and is at the heart of what is known as ‘Matilda Country’ as Banjo Paterson wrote his iconic song, ‘Waltzing Matilda’ here in 1895.  The town was originally established by those searching for the lost Burke and Wills expedition.

Fraser - The World's Largest Sand Island

 The Fabulous Great Barrier Reef

South of Brisbane, is the famous Gold Coast which has more canals than Venice and annual ration of 300 sunny days.  This part of the coast is home to massive high-rise apartment/shopping/hotel complexes, countless restaurants, bars and cafes and many types of entertainment including a number of exciting and fun filled theme parks.

One of the many wonderful Queensland Beaches

The state’s capital, Brisbane, sits on the Brisbane River which flows through the city out to Moreton Bay. The city’s foreshores are always calm as they are protected by Moreton and Stradbroke islands which provide a buffer from the Pacific Ocean.  Since being established as a convict settlement in 1825, Brisbane, with a population of over one a half million, has grown into a mature city hosting both the 1982 Commonwealth Games and the World Expo of 1988, that truly put the city ‘on the map’.
