Tucked into the historic heart of Tanunda in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, Langmeil Winery is a living piece of Australian wine heritage – home to what is believed to be the world’s oldest surviving Shiraz vineyard, planted in 1843.
Originally settled in 1842 by Prussian migrants seeking religious freedom, the site was a bustling trading village (Hufendorf) established by Christian Auricht and others. Here, Auricht planted those legendary Shiraz vines that still thrive today, producing Langmeil’s iconic flagship, The Freedom 1843 Shiraz – a profound expression of ancient Barossa terroir.
Revived in 1996 by the Lindner family (who continue to steward it with sons Paul as Chief Winemaker and James leading sales & marketing), Langmeil masterfully blends deep respect for old-vine tradition with thoughtful modern winemaking. The beautifully restored heritage buildings, manicured gardens, and charming village atmosphere create a warm, welcoming destination that feels both timeless and alive.
Standout experiences:
- Seated tastings in the historic cellar door – generous pours of award-winning wines including Valley Floor Shiraz, Orphan Bank Shiraz (from rescued pre-1860 vines), Pure Eden Shiraz from Eden Valley, and more.
- The Freedom Experience – an immersive 3+ hour journey visiting the 1843 Freedom vineyard, learning viticulture and winemaking, followed by a private tasting of the Old Vine Garden Collection.
- Old Vine Garden Experience and self-guided tours of the grounds.
- Accommodation options, long-table events, and a relaxed, come-as-you-are vibe perfect for lingering.
Langmeil is more than a winery – it’s a place where pioneering stories, old-vine magic, family legacy, and exceptional Barossa wines come together. Whether you’re a serious collector, a first-time visitor, or simply seeking a memorable day in the Valley, every visit deepens your connection to the region’s soul.
Langmeil Winery – true to the region, true to the community, true to ourselves.
